Osteen (senior pastor, Lakewood Church, Houston; Become a Better You!) is well known for his upbeat, infectious style and motivating messages. In his new book, he urges readers to break down mental barriers in order to live an extraordinary life. Using relatable stories from ordinary people and mixing in popular biblical stories such as those about Ruth, Moses, and David, Osteen enables readers easily to envision themselves in the narrative. By exhorting his audience to change their perspective on difficult situations, Osteen gives hope to those who may be despairing. Those who have enjoyed Osteen's other works will not necessarily find anything new here but will be pleased by the inspiration to live beyond the ordinary. Serious religion scholars will find very little to hold their attention, as Osteen is more interested in motivating people through positive thinking than in delving into deep biblical study or addressing controversial issues. He can be compared to Joyce Meyer, e.g., in her God Is Not Mad at You, although Osteen is more consistently upbeat. VERDICT A must for Osteen fans and for consideration by those who seek encouraging self-help messages.--Holly Hebert, Brentwood P.L., TN
